All in all...it was a good race...report coming up.

in order of finishing(L&E):

Zabil, Steve, Bean, Bacin, Rosman, Stupe, Azmar, Adilah.

Aileen request for a bottle of sunscreen the next time she had to stand out in the hot sun to capture the piccies. ;-)

Powerman...Powerless...

It was a hot hot day.

Woke up not feeling too well. Leg felt funny, as if it was refusing to wakes up.

Been massaging it for the past 3 days prior to race to ease the pull in the calf. Either the muscle cream i'm using is expired or it doesn't work at all, actually.

Full report later, but suffice to say, i finish the race in 4H 23Minutes. The last 10km run took me almost 90 minutes to complete, which is actually consist of 70 minutes of walking and fooling around and 20 minutes of actual running...can't win the race, might as well enjoy it...what a disclaimer!

Could it be better than 7H 41Min?

The Desaru race has came, and gone.

In total, i travelled 113km in 7 hours 41 minutes. That's 245m/min. I suspect more as i was running in a criss cross manner towards the final 10km. Dashing to water station that never existed.

My swimming time was as per expected. Hardly nothing to brag about compared to some that could float through 1.5km in 18 minutes (PD Triathlon - one crazy girl!!!).

My cycling time, well, 4 hours 8 minutes. Averaging about 23km/h to cover those 90km. (yes, and i know many would agree with me that final hill climb, it was scary...).

My running time of almost 3 hours. Well, that's both embarassing and inspiring. My personal best 10km was done in 48minutes(Subang 10k). Best half i did was in 2H 16mins(KLIM - half marathon category).

I thought that if i could run an average 10km/h speed, which is like a breeze on non Tri days, i would be able to ace it in 2 hours 15min, max.

I was dead wrong.

Well, for one, my old bike, hardly a road bike and perhaps a mountain bike wannabe, it's more like a touring bike (a heavy touring bike), groupset of the lowest range in the Shimano family (heard of Altus???). Alloy rims that well, as heavy as steel rims, and a size too small for me (i bought it when i was 16, what do y'all expect?)

The only saving grace is the borrowed 1.1 slick tyres from Chucks Azmar.

Wifey asked me before i fell asleep after the race dinner.

"don't you think your biking is the one that is draining you out? you see, i see others strolling as they past the transition area, but you were like struggling on your bike" She said.

Struggled i did. others does the 90km in 3 hours or 3.30 with minimal effort, and some reportedly told me on the flat, they were maintaining a 50km/h with lil effort.

I was trying to get 35km/h on the flat, for crying out loud.

Azman (condolences to him for his dad's passing) did offer me his road bike. But i couldn't do it, it's not mine and i know he worked hard to get those wheels. I do not want to be damaging any parts of the bike for my personal glory. (i did offer to buy over Chucks tyre...)

End of the day, will i even match Zabil's or Steve's achievement of doing 6h30-6h45 even if i have a road bike?

nah...i doubt so...at my current fitness level, i could perhaps improve the timing by what? 30 minutes max???

Meanwhile i keep thinking about this, anyone that is reading this and are in great *big hearted* mood to send me a free road bike (used or new), i'm more than welcome that.

IN CASE it doesn't reach me by Powerman this weekend, i'll use my Le Run again and promise to use that roadbike given FOC for next year races.

;-)

7h41min, lapped twice and almost last...

Desaru International Triathlon.

Introduction
It was akin to a half ironman event. 2km swim, 90km bike and 21km run. I was apprehensive the day before. As i was driving down with my wife, i kept silence most of the way as i wasn't really sure if i'll be able to finish it, even.

I set a really moderate target of completing the race in 8 hours. An hour for Swim. 4 for biking and 3 for running.

Doesn't help with my tummy giving way a week before the race. Maybe it was all fated. The anxiety attack came a week before the race...

The drive took 3 hours 30 minutes to Desaru. Pleasant most of the way, minus those daredevil F1 wannabe that overtook strings of cars like they are driving some cars with 12 air bags. Upon reaching Desaru Pulai, i could feel my tummy turning.

The Hotel
Was a bit worried when they couldn't find my reservation and was relieved when they found it under the front desk in the VIP basket. We were given a great deal compared to anyone else by virtual of being connected to the owner, no complains here and definately won't be telling anyone what price we had for the rooms.

Let me sum it up where accomodation and services at Desaru Pulai is concerned. It's first class. We've not received such personalised service (complete with good luck cards, which we think might also be given to the other triatheletes which came for the race) compared to anywhere else we went for races.

The staffs were friendly, the room were clean(with no toilet smell unlike the other resorts we stopped by), it was carpeted and plush! Definately 4 thumbs up!

The Apprehension
OK. Back to the race.

I didn't take my bike out until later in the evening and after registering for the race. Those bikes that some of them have sorta makes me feel as if i'm not worthy of the whole event. Carbon frame, carbon here and there...and me, in my Le Run. perhaps it will be worth the weight of at least 3 of those carbon/titanium/aluminuim bikes with aerobars and high end groupset.

Doesn't help with my V-brakes being unable to be adjusted so that neither sides of the pads were brushing against the rims...both front and back!

Most of the participants i saw at the registration counter were regulars which i presume everyone sees at any races, everyone seems to know everyone, well, except me, but i don't need to be known, do i? I then made up my mind that it will be a race against myself.

I found out later that the cut off time was 8 hours. Damn it. And i thought i could take my sweet time and do that 8 hours, minimum.

The Dinner
Dinner was fast, tar-pow-ed fried rice and mee goreng, my first solid food for the whole week. Need to carbo load, or whatever that is left in me won't be able to hack it through the race. Finding food in Bandar Penawar was hard. There wasn't any mamak or chinese food, which means it is an almost 100% malay community. Well, with the influx of people like me and other racers, perhaps it was about 98% Malay and 2% lain lain. The woman which i packed my food from was delighted to find me speaking in Malay and was surprised to find out i'm chinese. She gave me extra helping on the rice and noodles as i say i'll be racing tomorrow.

Bedtime was early, but i wasn't able to fall asleep. The thoughts of running half marathon after 90km of cycling sorta want to make me puke the food i just ate.

i do not know what time i finally slept but before i know it, the alarm went off at 6.30am and i was awake. Called steve to wake him up and he was mumbling something, which i later found out that he was dreaming about munching on some candy bars from a truck that spill it out.

3Hours to Race
Breakfast was swift, avoiding any sort of spicy food, i must say that i didn't ahve the appetite to eat, no doubt i won't be having lunch during the race, but somehow, i felt sick.

At 8am, we were all ready to drive to the race starting point 3km away. We unloaded out bikes, put it in the transition area, met up with Doc, Zabil and Azam, as they were staying at the official hotel. By the way, Azam will be reporting in for a 5 days intensive medical check up for his astronout bid. He ran the fastest 3km amongst other 800 astronuts hopeful.

We had out body marked. I am number 150, Doc 231, Steve 326, Bean 327. We felt like some cow ready for slaughter.

BY 9.45am, all the racers were asked to go to the beach for the starting of the race. Dato' Azalina, the Sports Minister came, apparently it was her birthday, and the organiser had a cake ready for her.

Doc told Aileen that he will see how, if he wants to continue the race after swimming. He was dissappointed that the regular kakis weren't around to swim with him. I felt like throwing up. The morning sun was burning into my eyes and the body never felt any funnier. Zabil managed to pop in one immodium. "anxiety attack la bro" he said.

At 10am, she pressed the air horn.

Too late to pull out by now.

2km Swim.
The beach never seems livelier than usual. This is afterall, the 10th installation of the Desaru race. About 450 triathletes and wannabes (like me) ran down the beach and into the cold water. Some were seen pushing people aside as they started their swim. some were walking until they can't walk anymore before they decide to swim. Frankly, i've not swam except on wednesday at Kelana Jaya. I was worried of course. Swimming was jsut perhaps 2% of the whole race. I reckon even if the fastest swimmer could get out of water 20 minutes ahead of me, i could still catch up if they have 2 puntures. But of course, those were wishful thinking. Moreover, if the fastest swimmer is actually Mr. Chris himself, that's almost imposibble.

The swim was uneventful for me, it was a rahter relaxing event. I covered the 2km in a moderate 45 minutes. Trying to conserve as much energy i could for the cycling and running league. I breaststroked all the way. reckon that i wasn't good enough to do front crawl, as i noticed a few of them that was swimming side by side with me was actually at the same speed as me, while doing front crawl!

Ran to the shower, took my time there to wash off the salty sea water, minus shampoo and soap. Entered the transition area, had 2 bananas and packed 2 more in my shirt's pocket (and i've enough chocolate, instead of powergel, in the small pouch i borrowed from karoline). Steve and zabil's bike is no where to be found anymore.

The Biking.
Hopped on my Ol' Bike.Had all the items i need, until i realised that i forgot to grab my sunnies. It was already hot. The sun was merciless. As i made my way towards the first U-Turn near the golf course, i knew i could very well finish the race today. Well, that was what i thought.

Into the first 20km, Mr. Chris overtook me. Lapped me silly. As i hit my first 30km, i was doing an average of 30km/h, pretty fast for all it's worth of my ol' bike.

The sun was hard, the wind was blowing harder. Roadies were overtaking me as if i'm some snail along the highway.

As i complete my 60km ride, i'm pretty much tired and almost worned out. I've came so far, i thought i might as well finish the last 30km which is left. by then, Mr. Chris overtook me again...and that goes to the few profesional guys as well, even Sonja lap me once.

It took me 4 hours plus to finish the 90km bike, by then, i saw Zabil and Steve doing their remaining 13km of run, saw doc on my second 30km lap, saw bean walking to the finish line MINUS his bike, and heard that Mr. Chris has finished the race in sub 4 hours.

Morale were low, no doubt, but i came so far, might as well finish it.

The Run.
I came in after the biking, jumped off my bike to test if my legs are still up to it. Wifey rushed to me to make sure i'm ok. I'm about half dead. Nevermind the 5 cloud 9 chocolate i had, 1 snicker bar, 1 powergel and 3 liters of water mixed with Excel Isotonic and 4 bottles of water which i used to drench myself in the hot afternoon heat...i have to finish the race, even if the whole gang that is already at the finish line have to run behind me and stick a knife on my back.

I ran out, this time, remembered to take my sunnies (hey, gotta look cool for it dude, don't want to look constipated...), i ran into the shower where the organiser set up to cool us down. Took 2 bananas with me and poured ice cold water to douse the heat. I think i qualified for some wet t-shirt competition and looking kinky with 2 bananas in my mouth.

The first 10km felt like my usual 10km run which i do. I think i managed to finish it in about an hour 20 minutes. I know i have to keep moving, at least a slow run, or a fast walk. The pain shifted from my hamstrings to my quads, then it disappeared and appeared on my calf, then my shin. It is like doing a few cycle around my legs. Everytime there is a watering and sponge station, i'll be there to put more ice cold water to ease the pain.

My second 10km was a crawl, i was reduced to walking. i reckon maybe a 4km/h walk which i don't think is very tri-athelete like. but what the heck, it's me against myself. Slowly watering station were closed down as the race enters it's final hour. I found myself grabbing a bottle which were thrown on the grown and filling it up with ice cold water. I had 2 sponge with me, which was later split into half by the 15km mark(as i was grabbing them so hard to ease the pain).

At my final 6km, i decided to make friend with Roy, which is 2 years older than me and from Singapore. He was having cramps from the waist down. We cheered each other up and found out that he have his pregnant wife waiting for him at the finish line.

we walked, we limped, we stretched. Passerby cheered and ask us to carry on. The final 3km never felt furhter.

500meters was like hell.

the final 500m was sweet.

Roy made a dash for it, i wasn't up to it anymore, no way i could hack it to even run, infact, my walk felt like a crawl, i felt like i'm HALF dead.

i crossed the line, greeted by the whole bunch of Light and Easy gang and wife in 7h 41 mins.

First thing i did?

"where my medal????" i asked!!!!

pictures will come later, need to take time to recuperate before Powerman this weekend.

ps- i saw penguin in powerbar tri suit...caya sama lu brader!!! Linking you to my site.

National Anthem

Negaraku will be changed to Malaysiaku.

The tune will be made slower to reflect what i've known since i knew what the song meant.

To be frank, i am rahter annoyed by some that take our country's independence, national anthem and flag as if it is some rubbish.

Some had resorted to calling our national anthem pirated from Terang Bulan (the Perak's state song) and some even say that we should now wear hula skirt and sing to it since it was taken from Mamula Moon.

I say, UP YOUR SORRY @$$.

If anyone were to say that we changed our National anthem so ever often with slow/fast tune, why not do some homework yourself?

go to the site stated below, and click and find under "U" for UK and US. See for yourself, the many variation of their own country's song.

Terang Bulan is actually an old *karaoke* song (if karaoke was invented back then) as if you listen to it, it is about men and their words!!!!

" Jangan Percaya Ujuran Lelaki, Berani Sumpah tapi takut Mati"

"do not believe the words of Man, dare to swear, but don't dare to die"

At least Negaraku has a more Dignified lyric, rather than asking their citizen to wage war.

Even the Mamula Moon (loosely translated as Mother Moon) most probably spoke about the same issues (ie love and men's word). I can't find the lyric but the song sure sound as sexy as Terang Bulan.

So, before any of you go and say that we are a nation of pirates (so???you mean to say you've not bought anything pirated/illegal???) and we are BOLEH-land, then why not start with yourself and try to remember what our National Anthem is all about.

Good site for National Anthem References

Let me remind all of you.

Tomorrow, 16th September 2005, is anohter significant date.

Not because the government promise that the Bulan Merdeka celebration will *End with a Big Bang*, but rahter, if memory serves me right (and since i did pass Sejarah in SPM, managed a C6, mind you), tomorrow is when Persekutuan Tanah Melayu was aptly changed to Malaysia.

It was supposed to take place on the 31st of August 1963, when Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore will be called Malaysia.

UNfortunately, Indonesia was against it and launched the *Konfrontasi Indonesia* (Pasal Melayu Raya la...).

The event didn't take place until the 16th September 1963. So, there you go, we might had achieved 48 years of independence, but we, as Malaysia, is only in existence for 42 years.

We still celebrate 31st August because that was the original date of Malaya's independence.

And guess who *pulled* out of the Federation on the 9th August 1965 and declared to had *fought* for their independence....

So, you see, National pride and National Day sans Independence Day, National Anthem sans Terang Bulan or Mamula Moon has no so whatever effect to weaken my love for my country.

You younger generation call it what you want (goverment restricting, no freedom etc etc...) and the grass might be greener on the other side (ie migrating or migrated ungrateful people from Malaysia)...Go on, complain as much as you want and say what you like, Malaysia will still be Number 1 until the day my body is covered in Her sand.

Happy Hari Malaysia all.

ps- post made in advance because i'm going to Desaru tomorrow first thing morning!

Countdown to Desaru

2km swim.

90km bike.

21km run.

The longest distance i ever did was just a 1.5km swim, a 60km bike and a 10km run. It took me a good 4 hours plus to get it over and done with, minus the pain because of chaffing.

COme saturday, i'll attempt my first half IronMan in Desaru.

Daunting.

Been having mixed feeling about it, not so afraid about the swimming as i do breast stroke most of the time.

90km biking seems far. It is like cycling from KL to Seremban and back to Nilai. I reckon it should take me at least 4hours if i manage to maintain an average of 23km/h speed on my trusty old bike.

The come the half marathon. I only once attempted a half marathon in my life. During the this year's KLIM, it took me a good 2 hours 20 minutes, that is only running, and no other activities going on. I reckon it will take me a good 3 hours. Which is, after swimming and cycling, i reckon i'll most probably be doing a slow run/walk most of the way...

wish me luck.

And i'm in the midst of recovering from anohter bout of food poisoning. Tummy spasming like i am doing 1000 sit ups and crunches a day and it is by all, not a pleasant feeling...with only 3 days to go to race day. sigh...

Hotel Room Hijacked

Just recieved an email from a friend stating that her/his room was hijacked right under her keyboard.

OK, i guessed all of you are thinking what is the fuss all about.

Next weekend is the Desaru International Triathlon. It borders on being a Half Ironman race.

Chris McCormack, the current world champ confirmed his participation ahead of the Next IronMan race (as a preparation la...profesional what).

This, it seems, has sorta made tonnes of *atheletes wannabe*, those that sit in the comfort of their couch surfing on channel 80-82 on Astro to catch Chris in action.

Here is the email excerpt (name changed to protect the victim):

"MayDay .. Hotel Hijacked !

Hello Everybody,

You are not going to believe this ..

Seems all the 4 hotels in Desaru are FULLY BOOKED.

Some say this is because everybody is going to Desaru to see elite
triathlete, Chris McCormack win this race without working up a sweat

Well .. the above theory sounds more logical than everybody going to
Desaru to see "me" fight for the second last positon (with you know who).

Anyway..

While calling up the hotel to recomfirm room reservations .. I found out
that someone had already taken the room that was book by Ms. A and me.

No Shit man !

8-)
Some "terrorist" group name WOOI-PENG have hijacked the hotel room that
was book by Ms. A and me.

Upon checking the hotel reservation computers, it seems the original room
booking was done for Ms. A and me.

Suddenly out of blue, a person name WOOI-PENG appeared, claimed our room
reservation and PAID IN ADVANCE FOR IT.

Computer error ? Missed communications ? Triple bribe ? Bad Karma ? Who
knows ?

But lucky for me.. I manage to secure another hotel room in Desaru.

How did I do it ?
No .. Not with MAGIC !! Cannot tell you gals and guys how I did it. But
some had speculate that I had informed the hotel that Penguin McCormack
who is Chris McCormack's "brother" needs a room or else !

But being triathletes of high moral substance, I hope no readers of this
site follow the way of Wooi Peng. And if you do ..

FOR GOD SAKE don't cancel Chris McCormack's room reservation and rebook
it under your name, paying in advance !

Now that I have SECURED a hotel room in Desaru, I have leisure time to
wonder what Ms. A ask me the other day.

"Could Wooi Peng be a horny and pretty female triathlete who just created
an eloborate excuse to meet us by hijacking our hotel room"

Its a long shot but I can see the IRON"

This of course, had me scrambling to check with the hotel i booked to see if my room has been hijacked....

In Memoriam : Whisky (1992-2005)

Whisky

Last Saturday, we had a very painful experience to put to sleep one more of our pet. Whisky.

Whisky is Brandy's Brother. But they do not get along.

About 5 months ago, we had his testicle removed because it was enlarged and was suspected to be cancerous.

Since then, he was never the same.

He was put to sleep, as he could no longer stand and do his business by himself.

He was also diagnosed with yellow fever and pneumonia.

Rest in Peace Whisky. Your sneaking out when the gate was ajar definately brings smile to me as always.

Love ya.
