Preamble
If you’ve been following my recent running and triathlon updates on the blog, you’ll know that 2026 has been a heavily milestone-driven, humbling year of rebuilding. Turning the big 5-0 while crawling through sports rehab for an overused right calf and an underactivated left glute completely rewrote my training playbook. Volume took a massive hit, and my running strategy shifted entirely toward tracking power with my Stryd pod, listening to my body, and chasing smooth, pain-free movement.
So, when the good team at Sports Paragon Malaysia (the official distributors of Brooks here) reached out with the all-new Brooks Ghost Amp, it felt like the perfect tool for exactly where I am in my running journey.
Brooks has spent the last couple of seasons stepping outside their traditionally conservative daily training box—giving us high-stack lifelines like the Ghost Max series. Now, they are shaking up their core lineup with the Ghost Amp. Built on the exact same foot-shape last as the legendary inline Ghost 18, the Amp is specifically tuned for runners who love the classic Ghost fit but want a significantly lighter, bounce-heavy, and energized ride to take their uptempo miles to the next level.
🔎 The Tech Stack: What Makes It "Amped"?
Before we talk about how it feels on the tarmac, let's break down the technical blueprint of the Ghost Amp. This isn't just a simple upper redesign; Brooks completely overhauled the underfoot experience.

✅ The Pros: Light, Springy, and Exceptionally Smooth
1. The DNA HYPE Midsole Materializes
For years, inline Brooks trainers were critiqued by gear geeks for feeling a bit firm or flat over extended mileage. Enter DNA HYPE foam. By combining the plush responsiveness of PEBA with the resilient structural integrity of EVA, Brooks has crafted a midsole that sinks slightly on impact to save your joints, but snaps right back with impressive speed. It offers a beautifully energetic, semi-firm ride that keeps you moving fluidly without making you feel completely disconnected from the ground.
2. Snappy SpringRamp Transitions
Integrated straight into the forefoot is their non-plated SpringRamp technology. Paired with an extra 4mm of stack under the ball of your foot compared to the base Ghost, this co-molded geometry creates a distinct sense of forward momentum. When you decide to turn over the legs and pick up the pace during a progression session or an interval block, you get a genuinely playful, snappy toe-off pop that makes maintaining target speed feel much less taxing.
3. True-to-Size Premium Lockdown
If you’ve run in the standard Ghost or the Ghost Max, you’ll immediately feel at home here. It features a meticulously comfortable warp-knit upper with minimal overlays. Unlike the Max series, the Amp features a thinly padded, fully gusseted tongue that cleanly wraps the midfoot to offer a flawless, slip-free lockdown that prevents hotspots even through high-speed cornering or agility drills.
4. Surprisingly Flexible & Versatile
Laboratory twist tests show that the Ghost Amp requires remarkably low torque to bend longitudinally. It moves and flexes organically with your foot strikes rather than forcing you through a heavy, aggressive rocker. This flexibility makes it a superb cross-functional tool that effortlessly transitions from road running to high-energy conditioning or strength work at the gym. This is a nice match to Glycerin Flex where it moves with my feet.
⚠️ The Caveats: Things to Keep in Mind
1. It Can Run Warm
While the engineered warp knit feels incredibly plush and premium against the foot, it is woven tightly to maintain structure at higher speeds. Running out in our balmy, high-humidity Malaysian weather means your feet will start feeling toastier than usual past the 45-minute mark. It’s a great upper, but not a hyper-ventilated summer mesh. I have however, got away with not wearing socks, so I don't really have any issues with the heat. But if you do like thicker socks, be aware of this and consider thinner socks
2. Limits for Absolute Speed Workouts
The DNA HYPE foam provides a brilliant energy return for daily runs and steady uptempo paces. However, because it lacks a rigid carbon or fiberglass plate, it loses a little bit of its snappy responsiveness when you push it all the way down into full-gas sprint paces. For short track intervals, you’ll still want to look toward a dedicated racing flat like the Hyperion series. Having said that, it is much more responsive than traditional Ghost line up or the Max series. Uptempo pace, no issues. Tempo, no issues as well, at least for me.
🗒 The Verdict: Who is the Ghost Amp For?
The Brooks Ghost Amp is a highly versatile, incredibly fun addition to the Brooks ecosystem. If you love the dependable, plush comfort of the Ghost line but have found previous iterations a bit too heavy, blocky, or uninspiring for faster days, the Amp completely solves that problem.
It strips away the weight, slashes the high heel-to-toe drop down to a very modern 6mm, and pumps a lively dose of nitrogen-infused energy straight into the midsole. For runners tracking daily miles or working back through rehab blocks where impact protection and natural stability are paramount, it’s a brilliant, comfily balanced cruiser that simply makes you want to keep showing up.
