Nike+ Air Structure Triax 10+

Mouthful for a shoe eh?

But rest assured that this shoe rocks. (OKla, some say Asic is DE SHOE for runners, some swear by Saucony)

Remember when i was passed a pair to run in during KLIM 07?

Brand NEW!

Now that Nike+ is available in the local store near you since 1st April and Ashraf Sinclair was reported to had ran 12km in Nike+ Moire on the first day, imagine what motivation these gears can give you!

Ashraf on Moire

OK, i'm no Ashraf or even Harith Iskandar...but i'm Stupe.

Fu Yoh..

So, when Nike told me i can come collect the Nike+ Air Structure Triax 10+, i went right away...

You see, i'm getting a second hand shoe that is as good as new. The shoes were used in Fitness First branches to allow the people to try Nike+, so, i can say these shoes clocked less than 10km of mileage! That is better than the first pair they gave me which i clocked at least 42km with it! (i smell them already, no smelly feet smell la!)

Thank you Nike!

Now all i need is the sports kit and an iPod Nano. If any fell from the sky, can you please kindly let me have it!

Dun underestimate Cikgu Adnan!

Color Me Badd

Mix.Fm played Color Me Badd song this morning as i drives back from House Of Nestle after passing Bandit his Nike Shoes.

CMB

I cranked up the volume as i love this song. I bet most of you love it too! So, today i declare it as COLOR ME BADD day!!!

All 4 Love

Im so glad you're my girl
I'll do anything for you
Call you every night
And give you flowers too
I thank the lord for you
And think about you all the time
I ask him everyday
That you'll for-ever be mine

Youre so beautiful

Chorus

Oh girl I think I love ya
I'm always thinkin of ya
I want ch-ya to know I do all for love

And want you to know I do it all for love

I will never leave you sugar

I look in to the future
I see you and me

Batang Bas

Ever seen a bas' batang (local colloiqual for penis)?

I had a good chuckle as i was driving back from Melaka, passing through Batu Berendam to get to the highway.

It was raining heavily and i just couldn't resist taking a pic of the batang bas...

Seriously.

hahahahahah!

OK, i know, that's lame. But the rain yesterday wasn't lame. It was so heavy it wasn't funny driving along the highway back from Melaka, added with the ongoing road work, it was accident waiting to happen, and true enough, there were 3 accidents which happened as i made my way back.

One was an old Datsun 120Y which brashed into the wooden barrier after Alor Gajah.

One was a case of a bus rear ending anohter bus and rear ended anohter car...

And the last one was on the opposite side of the road, where one Perdana spun out of control and ended up facing the oncoming traffic AND landed on the slope near Pedas/Linggi.

It baffles me how people just think accident won't happen to them and drives like devil possesed. A few cars were taking the emergency lane and overtaking 16 wheelers ON THE LEFT. At least 2 cars i saw was with kids inside. An Ambulance (without it's siren blaring) was seen driving like F1, zig zagging and almost being squeezed off the road by anohter 16 wheelers as it tries to overtake on the left (emergency lane).

This was taken at 5pm...traffic slowed down because of the Datsun 120Y up ahead

People just never learn.

As for me, i just listen to Mix.fm to all the Love Songs they played...definately not as stressful as trying to reach the toll plaza 10 mintues ahead like how these crazy drivers does!

As for Batang Bas...i wasn't joking, isn't it!

Hotel Reservations Dot Com

This is a sponsored posting

I chance upon this website that offers hotel reservation worldwide.

So, in my bid to get the IronMan title, i entered Langkawi into the search box for hotel reservations and found to my surprised, a few hotels which is in their list!

I then next compared their rates. I found them pretty reasonable as the hotels suggested are top of their class. What more if you are a tourist flying to Malaysia to enjoy a weekend or two in the Duty Free Island of Langkawi?!

So, since this is Visit Malaysia Year 2007, i put in the next search to Kuala Lumpur to see what's the result would be like.

The first on the list was Sheraton Imperial which was only USD98 per night and that is weekend rate! Anyone in KL would know that Sheraton is smacked right in the middle of the city and at such attractive pricing from this hotel/motel reservation site, this is really a bargain!

The cheapeast hotel they suggested was Swiss Inn in China town. For USD36 per night, that is about what the local would pay for for a night stay! This is really great as some online reservation site does apply a bigger surcharge to possible tourist that wants to visit a certain city in their travel.

So, if you do plan to travel, click on Hotel Reservations and book rooms through them as you are almost assured of the best possible rates anywhere in the world!

DIY : MTB shifter on a Road bike???

You heard me right.

Forget those STI's.

Damn yummy ok!

For those that do not know what STI is, it stands for Shimano Total Intergration. Basically it's the brake lever and gear shifters all rolled into one slick unit.

The MTB equivalent

But since we don't need a MTB intergrated system (or also known as Dual Shifters), we can always go one step back and settle for those individual shifters.

"Bro, i've done it!", Bandit called me on Sunday night.

"I've successfully put the LX shifter into my Felt S22", He added, in case i start to speculate what he has done.

This is how it looked like. Damn cool (and innovative ok!)

No road bike will look like this! Ever!

And here is my bike, updated with the Tri bars and it's first official pimped picture!

To be tweaked further

Rider Or Bike Factor

Seriously.

It is not all about the bike. Rider is the most important.

I just got back from riding an easy 30k with Geoffrey Kronenburg through my usual route. (Geoff was in Team 2020 with Yuen Li and Puzi in year 2000 and 1999, he is also an IronMan and does races with Quick Release, amongst his credential!)

He made it looked too simple. Armed with De Rosa 9 speed (largest cog was 21) which weighed in at 18lb, i was struggling to keep up with him on the climb at Bukit Damansara.

It's really not the bike. It's the machine that powers the bike that really counts.

So, we covered 25km before i had a flat after the Pencala Tunnel. I've learnt a lot in that short 1hour 14minutes of pedaling with him, just by watching him, i guess imitating how he does it will be the first step in correcting my own technique. Yes, everyone's biomechanic isn't the same.

The Tri Bar worked well, i did not have upper body ache as per what some would say. Infact, the only discomfort i get is when i switch to road bike position, as the stem is too low, the pain on the palm as i hold the brake cover was at time, painful as all my weight rested on the palm.

Will do more fine tuning and might just take Geoff's advice to install the Tri Bar below the handle bar and reposition the elbow pad to the handle bar, this way, i can raise the handle bar stem to my normal height and still get into aero position.

Oh ya, top speed differences? Obvious! Without pedalling through the downhill, i managed a good 56.5km/h which i usually only get by spinning the crank like some dog! This time, i didn't even pedal!!!

Thanks Geoff, for the opportunity to ride with you, truly, you've shown to me that it's the RIDER, NOT THE BIKE!

FRIM : First Timer MTB

Last saturday, me, wifey, her partners (in Cats Whiskers), their respective husbands and "Auntie Gorgeous" (that is how she wants Ryan to call her, or in short, Auntie G), went to FRIM for a ride.

Except for Siew Peng, Roland and me, the rest are all MTB virgin. Having only ridden the bike on the road around their house, this was certainly gonna be an outing for them.

Infact, this is wifey's second time on the bike. Her first time was around Damansara Perdana which she claims "i sweat more because i was scared of the traffic than the cycling".

Roland, Auntie G and Siew Peng

I was taken aback when i had to pay RM5 to enter FRIM plus RM1 for wifey. This is a big ripoff. I did not know that going to the park is this expensive!

Anyway, that's the only unpleasant thingy about the whole thing.

Roland suggested we bring them to Steroid Hills.

OK, to the JUNCTION of Steroid Hills.

Wifey seems really good with the MTB eventhough this is her first time offroad. Very proud of her.

Power la...

Even Keng Chee, on his first time offroad did really well. The day before i help Chit purchase a full suspension Le Run Cyber 21 speed from the LBS for a song. The LBS boss offers to take the bike back at the same price should he want to upgrade in the near future. What a deal!

back side pain la...

Tjeanna was even better. She was riding her brother's old Le Run bike minus any suspension with ease! Damn good!

Dun play play...no suspension i tell you!

After Steroid Hills (or lack of it) we headed to the waterfall area for a quick breakfast. Nasi Lemak and burger were eaten and it's time to burn it all off and so me and Roland suggested that we bring them to Rover's Trail.

I tell you, these newbies took FRIM like it was their everyday ride. Apart from the steeper climb, they cycled all the way up! Well done!

I'm really proud of Wifey as she totally did what i did not expect her to do. You see, she is afraid she might fall, but she didn't. So, it's fair that she pushed the bike on the final part of Rovers where it's a steeper decline.

Could it be the fear that the bike will kill you?

Maybe i feed wifey with too much of Calvin and Hobbes?

Killer bike...

Bottom of it, i'm proud of all you newbies, especially wifey! Well done!

Tri Bar, Speedometer Mount and Wheels!

Took me about an hour to get it fixed.

Before

The set up was simple, i removed my HRM mounting and my Speedometer. Then, mount the Tri Bar and bolt it down.

I sat on the bike and test it out, doing minor adjustment to ensure that my forearm and upper arm will be in a 90 degree angle before tightening it.

Did minor adjustment to the seat height by increasing it by 5mm (www.slowtwitch.com's 5mm rules) and lowered the stem to it's minimal height as the Tri Bar was raised by almost an inch and half. Got to get as Aero as possibly can. (To look fast, remember?)

Then, i angled the nose of the seat down a bit to give more room for the family jewel (don't want to end up with my nether region numb after the ride) and checked the position against the big mirror in the dining room.

The results?

OK, i need to lose those flabs...otherwise, position looked like a winner. (no, i'm not showing any pics of the flabs)

After : err....

As seen in the After pics above, the Tri bar looked funny on the handle bar. So, i did furhter adjustment by tilting the handlebar up a bit, as i've lowered the stem, i would want the brake handle to be higher so it would be more comfortable for me. Then, i tilt the tri bar down to almost level and checked for comfort again.

At the current after "after" adjustment, the bike looked more normal without any sign that it would looked funny. (pics to come later, forgot to take yesterday la)

Next step was to find way to mount my speedometer.

I ransacked my tool box and found an unused pipe which was light enough and thin enough to be easily cut through the hacksaw. Took some measurements and proceed to cut it at 6.5cm long.

Then i fix it and held it in place with the help of a few cable tie and mounted the speedometer bracket onto the pipe.

Looked "intergrated" eh?

Ta da....The other black thingy is my HRM mount

And this is how it looked like from the rider's seat...

cockpit - can do la!

Azmar called me up later in the afternoon and passed me a set of 700c Wolber's rim and 7 speed cogs.

Wobler TX Profile Aero 700

I've been waiting for this and i was so excited with this.

So, yesterday, i took the old tire out and gave the rims a wash.

The cog size is 13-14-15-17-19-21-24. Compared to my 5 speed's 14-17-19-21-24 it seems to have no differences when it comes to climbing power but i would suspect a better distance gain on the highest gear combo of 52-13.

7 speed...

I refitted the tires and tubes into the Wolber and fitted it to the bike.

What a difference the rim made the bike looked! (OKOK, pictures later ok!).

Then, i couldnt' resist. I had to weight it.

hehehehe

So, i took the weight before and after to see if i need to lose more weight on myself.

When i first got the bike, it weighed about 9kg. So, when i fitted the TriBar, extra bottle cage, SPD-SL pedals, alloy seatpost, it weighed in at 10kg.

10kg

To make sure the scale is as accurate as possible, i stood on the scale and weigh myself with and without the bike. On both occasion, the clean weight differences is exactly 10kg.

Then, i changed the rims to Wolber and instantly it showed a good 500grams (or less) savings!

9.5kg?

OK, fair enough that the tolerance of these scale might be as high as +/-500grams, but i did took a few readings (with me on the scale; as the higher the weight goes, the tolerance will be less and weight shown will be more accurate) and it all shown the needle to be deflected to about the same spot.

So, officially, even with the TriBar (which claims to weigh in at 595grams) and 2 extra cogs in the rear freewheels, the bike "officially" gained only 500grams or less!

The weight savings equals to 500ml of water and i still think i would benefit more losing 5kg (lets make that 5.595kg since the Tri bar is in) than investing in lighter equipments. A 2006 Merida (with Aluxx frame) fitted with Tiagra groupset (minus the pedals) would weigh in at 8kg. So, a 1991 Colnago with these ol'skool stuff coming in at 9.5kg is very reasonable!

Sexy!

The old 105 RD(Rear Derailleur) works like a charm on the 7 speed, all it took me was an adjustment on the "H" screw setting to allow the RD to drop to the higher gears and fine tuning adjustment for the SIS (Shimano Indexing System - as in "click and accurate" shifting in layman terms)

Now, all is left to do is to true the wheels (i lost my spoke wrench) at my usual bike shop!

Bandit called me up and told me he successfully put in the LX shifters into his Road Bike's handle bar. So, instead of him spending on the more expensive STI system, he has Mountain bike styled shifter on the level portion of his Felt Tri Bike.

Now, should i do the same? More pictures will come, i promise!

Congrats Iqbal & Lenny!

And a big welcome to Baby Mikail!

Hello you!

He was borned on 13th April 2007, weighing in at 3.27kg big at almost midnight through C Sect.

Contraction was felt in the afternoon and Lenny went into labour for 4 hours before Dr. Raman suggested C Sect as the labour not progressing after being induced.

Baby, Mother will be discharged today and all is well!

Congrats again!!!

Wah..so much hair...

Ryan was visibly (and orally) excited as he sort of makes baby talk with everyone in the room and flap his arms in excitement when i showed him Mikail.

Ahbuden...waiting so long liao for Mikail to come to the world...

Here's to you Bro and Lenny, may your son brings you as much joy as Ryan did for us!

IronMan : Tri Bar On Road Bike

I just got my Tri Bar.

Now, I know i've spoken of Tri Suit before and some were asking what the hell is Tri suit. Before i go on, just let me simplify by saying a Tri Bar is essentially also called an Aero Bar.

In laymen's term and understanding, this bar, once fitted on the bike, will give it the "go faster" look. Even if the cyclist isn't cycling as fast, it appers to be fast.

Getting an aerobar or (from now on will be refered to as tri bar, shorter to type) a tri bar fitted on a road bike is one of minor upgrade any roadbike could use if the rider does triathlon.

There is differences between a proper Tri-Bike and a Road Bike. Most notably the geometry. We shalt not go into this today. And since i have a Road Bike, lets just focus on this setup first.

But if you must insist, there is a good write up here at Michigan Bikesports' website

Taken from the above said website -Thank you!

Tribar essentially lets the rider ride in an aerodynamic position. The smaller frontage when the elbows are tucked in meant that the wind has less surface to catch on to the body. This would meant less resistance and (hopefully) faster cycling time.

See, look fast isn't it?

But fitting a tri bar on a road bike is tricky.

First because of the longer top tube. Usually, the top tube correspond with the size of the bike. My Colnago is a size 54 bike (54cm from middle of the Bottom bracket to the top of the seat stay) and my top tube is also 54cm from the seat stay to the stem.

Secondly the longer stem on Road bike will make the placement of the tri bar higher than usual. This would be easily compensate with me lowering the handle stem lower by an inch perhaps. If that fails, i will bolt the tri bar from underside. This might possibly solve the problem.

So, before i show you what my tri bar look like, lets dream a lil bit ok?

Perhaps more carbon fibre than the ah beng's Honda Civic

OK, back to reality.

Here is the Tri bar i got from my LBS.

595grams...sure boh...

The other tri bar that i could think off that would be almost similiar with this one is by Profile Design.

PD's Century - 600grams

PD's Air Stryke - 692grams

I would say that the Tri bar i got from the LBS is value for money. It might not have many features compared to the foldable wings of the Air Stryke or even the adjustability of the elbow cup or even the brand's sticker, but this will do for now. Afterall, i'm a Blogger/Triathelte/Father on budget. Purchasing of this Tri bar would meant that i would have to skip my lunch for at least 17 working days (RM3.50x17=More or Less RM58, extra can buy drinks la), which essentially, works in tandem with my target of losing 5kg before IronMan 2008. Hahahahahahaah!

Side View

There is a few website which i've been using as reference and also for tips on training and technical advises, but the best so far is SlowTwitch.com where it advocates nothing but proper Tri Bike fittings. It has also offered a few tips on how to maximize the usage of a Road Bike as a Tri Bike with a few simple adjustment.

Now, i can't wait to go back and fit the bar on. Other minor consideration would be where could i place my speedometer from now since the tri bar will take up the space where my meter resides! Got to put on the DIY cap again!

Hits of 1994 - The Year I Turned 18

No Thanks to Desparil, i got tagged. I've missed out on a few previously (one from Dr.M - Sorry bro!) and i guess before i felt more sorry than anything else, i better get this done.

The whole tagging system goes like this...(if i may qoute from Desparil's blog)

1. Go to Pop Culture Madness site.

2. Pick the year you turn 18 years old.

3. Get yourself nostalgic over the songs that year.

4. Write something about how those songs affected you.

5. Pass it on to five more friends.

Funny how it seems that i could relate more to the songs in 1993 than 1994(the year i turned 18), but since the rules says that it must be the year i turn 18, so be it!

OK, here goes, in no particular preferences...

I Swear - All-4-One

I swear by the moon and the stars in the skies
And I swear like the shadow that's by your side

Stupe Says : This is like the staple song of the year. I admit i has a single of this song. Perhaps it appeals to me because of the corny lyrics. Swearing to the Moon and Stars isn't exactly gonna go anywhere...they don't understand and your words don't need to be honoured!

On Bended Knees - Boys-II-Men

Can we go back to the days
Our love was strong.
Can you tell me how
A perfect love goes wrong.
Can somebody tell me
How to get things back,
The way they used to be.
Oh God, give me the reason,
I'm down on bended knee.

Stupe Says : Don't tell me you did not sing to this song ok! How can?! Anyway, this brought back memories la, in one way more than the other.

Here Comes The Hotstepper - Ini Kamoze

No no we don't die, yes we mul-ti-ply
Anyone test will hear the fat lady sing
Act like you know, Rico
I know what Bo don't know
Touch them up and go, uh-oh!
Ch-ch-chang chang

Stupe Says : I love this song because I can't dance, and this song make me move my two left feet.

All For Love - Bryan Adams, Sting and Rod Stewart

Let's make it all for one and all for love.
Let the one you hold be the one you want,
the one you need,
'cause when it's all for onee it's one for all.
When there's someone that should know
then just let your feelings show
and make it all for one and all for love.

Stupe Says : Admit it, you've seen the movie more than once and like it or not, these 3 men with coarse voice which sounded like they need tonnes of Strepsils and lozenges to ease those pain in the throat, rocks.

Without You - Mariah Carey

Well I can't forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that's just the way
The story goes
You always smile but in your eyes
Your sorrow shows
Yes it shows

Stupe Says : The only reason why i like this song was because Air Supply sang this before her in 1991. I dig Air Supply ok!

The Most Beautiful Girl In The World - Prince

Could u be the most beautiful girl in the world?
Its plain 2 see ure the reason that God made a girl
When the day turns into the last day of all time
I can say I hope u are in these arms of mine
And when the night falls before that day I will cry
I will cry tears of joy cuz after u all one can do is die, oh

Stupe Says : Way before he was reduced to a Symbol as his name and way before he was "The artist Formerly Known as Prince", he was simply known as Prince. And he looked as if he could tear Michael Jackson apart when they jammed with James Brown back in the 80's. Well, at least he only changes his name where else MJ changed almost everything except his name.

Baby I Love Your Way

Moon appears to shine and light the sky
With the help of some fireflies
I wonder how they have the power shine shine shine
I can see them under the pines
But don't hesitate 'cause your love won't wait hey
Ooh baby I love your way every day
Wanna tell you I love your way every day
Wanna be with you night and day uh yeah

Stupe Says : OKOK, by now you all would know i'm some mushy romantics. But who could resist the reggae like song such as this? I'm a big fan of UB40 ok! This song is still in my play list until today!

So, there you have it. I'm not gonna tag anyone as there is only that much pop songs to go around!

Have a great weekend y'all!
