Putrajaya International Triathlon 2012 Race Report and A Birthday Wish

A rather last minute race announced which sort of raised my eyebrow a lil. With another marathon race in Langkawi that was announced about 30 days from the race day, my radar for irresponsible organisers went haywire. For your info, the Langkawi International Marathon, scheduled to take place on December 9, 2012 (aka yesterday) was "postponed to December 23, 2012" or will happen in 2013, a week before the race.
So, naturally, I was very very cautious. I believe some friends are even irritated with my statement if the race organisers can be trusted. I later found out that the organiser is Hivelocity - a Singapore company that did the Putrajaya Junior Triathlon, very successfully. Confidence returned and i signed up the day after.
Limited Races
Triathlon races are hard to come by nowadays. Gone are the hey days where there will be races once a month. Where one would have the chance to choose and pick. With local triathlon races evolving over the years, triathletes are now limited with only Kenyir Triathlon, PD Triathlon and Desaru Long Distance Triathlon (or Desaru 116 as the rebrand it). I am not including races outside of Malaysia as that would require a whole different level of logistic and leave/offday from work application. Naturally, when a local race pop-up, I will sign up for it if the race distance and the travelling distance is what I will look forward to.
Putrajaya International Triathlon (PIT) is slotted as a 1km Swim - 30km Bike and 8km Run race. A shorter than usual "Olympic" distance by a total of 12.5km.
*monologue moment :But it is in Putrajaya. 30minutes drive away. Better than driving all the way to Kenyir for an almost similar distance, right?
Race Day
I planned to take the race easy and make it part of my training. With Transition being my weak point, this race should offer a good opportunity for me to cut down my usual dilly-daly to a fast transition. Of course all these are "plan". My day started at 5am and I ate my usual breakfast aka rolled oats in cold water. With 2hours to allow the food to digest, I should be able to get the energy when i need it most - in about an hour into the race. Planning for race day nutrition is important. For the race, i went minimal. I have been training my body to burn fat as energy and it has only shown me good results so far. This PIT wasn't my A-race and it was a training for me.
With the two supporters. My daugther was home due to chicken pox.
The PIT has attracted close to 300 participants, of which many did not show up on race kit collection day and/or the race day itself. The transition area wasn't packed but the camaraderie was definitely there. It was like a mini gathering of sort every time a triathlon race happens. This time was of no exception. There were many Tri-virgin too. It takes great courage to face your biggest fear. Be it swimming (not in a pool or controlled environment), cycling (not in a RPM class) or running (not on the road for fear of being mugged or run down by vehicles), or all three in succession.
Pretty full T-area
Body marking was simple. For the uninitiated, body marking during triathlon is a ritual by itself. You get "branded" on your arms your designated race number. This is actually required for the swim section only as you can't wear your race bib in the water. More gory explanation was (not verified) if you drown, it allow whoever that find you, identify you. So, yes, you are nothing more than a number.
NEXT!
517 - that's my fat arm
I initially thought the race will start at 7am. I was then told it will happen at 7.30am. As more people comes in, the transition area became a place where laughter and jokes were shared and exchanged. I love triathlons!

Most of us took the opportunity to get into the lake water. It was a cool morning with rain happening the night before. Naturally, I was expecting a nipple-raising experience. Good to report that no protrusion happened as the lake water was warm.
Wet and ready
As the swim course was being setup (yes, it was being setup as we were waiting for the race to start), Uncle Chan showed up. Triathlon Malaysia was the "technical advisor" for the race. Still, there were NO real organiser at place. There were confusion on the swim course, bike course and of course the run course. But as most that signed up know that this will happen (as in the race being announced so last minute), there will be "issues". I came with the intention for an all-out training. So, It did not bother me badly except for the safety on the bike course.
And we swim...clockwise? Or was it counter?
Mr. Chan was in his usual joking mode. Apparently only 30 people showed up in the race briefing the day before. So a rather last minute briefing was needed again. There were a few chances such as the change of transition area (which most found out the morning arriving at the site), swim direction (changed from counter-clock to clockwise) and run to be two-loops instead of one loop.
Listening anxiously to the jokes. Thanks Yin Fook for the capture
When asked about the biking loop - Mr. Chan pledged ignorance initially but covered it up with "don't worry, there will be Marshall stationed everywhere" and "those of you that cycle in Putrajaya will know the usual 30km loop". I know for a fact that the cycling will be done at a section most exposed to fast traffic. It is the highway from Serdang that joins the Putrajaya outer loop towards Dengkil. It is a super 8 lane highway with many interchanges and cars known to speed beyond 120km/h cutting lanes.
I was worried. I will be lying if i say otherwise.
Or you can Gangnam to control traffic
Many said that the organiser for this race (Hivelocity) has good record organising the last Putrajaya Jr. Triathlon. I signed up because of their reputation to be able to conduct a race. Like Mr. Chan mentioned, it was a rather last minute thingy that he was approached. I guess that also meant that the risk involved (we all signed an indemnity form during race collection) lies with ourselves. One more thing, the race will be monitored without any timing devices. Meaning, If you choose to cheat, you can. With prize money only for the top-3 of each category, I do not see how/why anyone would want to cheat. Let the Fun, begin.
Or not? No More Gangnam, please?
Mr Chan then asked everyone to enter the water. It will be a water start. Yours truly jumped in and tread water - that seems to last forever as we waited for the VIP to blow the air horn. Photos from now onwards were taken by wifey. I decided not to race with a camera due to the short distance.
This is not a norm for many Malaysians that aren't comfortable to be in water.
SWIM 1000m
The race started and the calm water of Putrajaya Precint 6 lake turned into a mini tsunami as triathletes fumble through the only contact-sports moment. It was like a feeding frenzy. In 2-minutes, i heard shout for help as one or two triathletes had trouble in the water - likely being kicked, groped, scratched etc. It is all normal for a triathlon race and it is nothing personal.
Yaaaahhhhhhh! KILLL!!! Photo courtesy of Yin Fook.
For the past 1-month, I've been diligently swimming at least twice a week in the pool concentrating on muscle memory to perform freestyle exclusively for at least 1000m. Historically, my triathlons has always had the mix of freestyle and breast-stroke. After that many years of racing, i thought it is time to change. Think of it as a "upgrade" like going from a 105 to DuraAce, only that this will be free. Why this?
You see, freestyle requires strong upper torso endurance. Unlike Breast-stroke where the legs play a pivotal role to propel forward. What this meant is that you save you legs and conserve energy for the bike and run later. Kicking in freestyle during triathlon is just to stay afloat. Forward motion is mainly upper body. Happy to report that the mission was successful. :D
It is no secret that Garmin 910XT could not plot open water swim very well, more so if the hand that has the watch were not lifted long enough to allow GPS capture. My swim time of about 24minutes reflects pretty well on the distance that I should had covered and in this manner, I supposed the distance was pretty close to the promised 1km. Any shorter and it will show on everyone's timing (so, if you been consistently swimming 25minutes to cover 1km in the swimming pool and suddenly found yourself clocking in 20minutes, chances are, you have cut short the swimming or the swim was severely under distanced).
Am I last? Happy to see wifey! Love ya!

OK, NOT last! Out of water with full freestyle - DONE! Thanks Yin Fook for the photo.
Next challenge was the Transition. I sucked at Transition. I take almost forever. This time, i vowed to change that. Initially I planned to put my biking shoes to the pedal and run out of T1, jump on the bike, wear the shoe, strap it and cycle away. Then it dawned to me - I've never done this before.
Am i gonna risk falling down and hurting myself?
It was a NO. So, i happily (and in very fast manner) put on ( in this order) my race bib, my sunglasses, my helmet, Shoes and out I went.
*gasp* Nice arse!
I've not went on the bike since Powerman as I decided to improve on my swim. With a shredded tires from the last trainer session, I do not have much choices as well. Noticing that many has actually left the Transition (look at the photo above, most bikes were out!) I have much catching up to do.
Guess what. My T1 time was a fast 1:58. Got to be some record or something (for myself that spend at least 4:30 in T1 usually)
Ryan giving me a push. :) Thanks Wifey for the photo!
Bike 30km
Muscle memories work wonder. I begin hammering on the bike and by the time i hit the highway, I was going at 35km/h. I keep telling myself that "It is ONLY 30km" and I know I should be able to wrap this up in under an hour. The route was rolling and I see every hill as an opportunity to go faster on the other side. I begin to catch up more triathletes that has overtaken me on the swim and cheering those I know that I overtook. There were no rules on this cycling (or this triathlon) and as usual, you will get leeches leeching on you drafting. If i wanted a team sports, I would had continue playing rugby. But since this is a fun outing (for me at least), perhaps, allowing the younger less experience draft behind me could be a good "guidance" too. What i realised was that they all dropped on every hill attack and they relied on every downhill to catch up with me. The legs felt strong. I was maintaining about 35km/h at about 75% of my HRmax. As I approaches the main highway with many traffic, I was extra cautious. So cautious that I missed one final turn - and an important one at that. You see (or did not see), there were minimal marshall on the road. Many junctions were not guarded and those that were controlled has very little traffic aka insignificant. Realising that I overshot the junction, i turned back and double up back to T2. Thank goodness the distance I overshot was not significant. What was loss was momentum and a few minutes. 30km cycling done in about 53minutes with 33.7km/h average.
Total elevation gain was only 524m
I considered myself lucky as I paid attention to the road sign and only overshoot by a few hundred meters. Some i knew went as far as extra 7km (total) more! That got to sucks! I dismounted and ran into T2. I was excited with the new shoes I received from Skechers Malaysia. I was given the GoBionic - the minimalist zero-drop shoes to race a day before. Actually, I have a choice to take any shoes in the store, but since I have the Brooks Pure Drift to compare with, why not take a minimalist and see how they size up? It was a fast transition T2 for me. Believe me, all done in 1:38. Got to be my fastest ever T2 (or T any!)
Run 8km 6km
Sitting quietly, waiting since Morning
I have been training more on my run. I believe that running fitness is the single most important basic that any triathlete should have. I was never a firm believer until i saw how a more structured training and correct technique could help. Over the past eight months, I've improved and surprised myself so much that i know i am on the right track with my running fitness. I did a 5km HIIT and a 5km Easy (total 10km) a day before the race. I know from my own ability, 8km can be wrapped up in 40minutes, maximum. With every intention to make this a high intensity workout outing, I blasted the moment I left transition. Wifey captured the moment beautifully.
Flying? I am impressed!
One thing I immediately felt running on the GoBionic was how I unconsciously land midfoot all the time. It was so pronounced that I then consciously monitored every stride. My Garmin beeped to asked me to slow down as "Your Heartrate is too high". It apparently shot up to 196bpm the first 500m. Running the route and reaching the first U-turn, it dawned to me that the run will NOT be 8km. A fast maths in the head says it will be 6km at most (as the U-turn was at about 1.4km). I ran the first loop in a consistent 4:30 pace saving  the rest for the final hurrah. I was doing a negative split tempo at race pace. I completed the first loop in a rather easy cruising heart rate of 150bpm++.
At the end of the first loop U-turn.
I spend the last 3km in my upper zone aiming for negative split all the way. Hyperventilating and committing to every step. I was very aware of my surrounding and remembered telling a few friends to keep going. It was a chaotic-zen-like moment. Haha.
Heart Attack 3-times passing my MaxHr of 186bpm (corrected for my age of 36)

4:30 pace mostly. Dip were the U-turn where had to be careful not to fall/slip
My 5km time was close to my PB. 6km was done in 26:51.
Feeling good, i pushed the final 1km and finished the whole race in a good 1:47:49.
No, i wasn't doing the Gangnam.
And no, I wasn't in Top 3. Meaning, I am still average in every sense. :) it was a fun outing with an all out training opportunity. I now know my max and how much more I can push the envelope. Not getting any younger, but age got nothing to do with breaking our own limits. Running into the finish line, I received a medal and a big smile from wifey.
Taken by Ryan. :)
Race Pros
1. Putrajaya is an awesome place for triathlon.
2. There is a race.
3, What race? It's a fun-outing.
Race Cons
1. Last minute.
2. Traffic on the bike course.
I believe many came knowing it will be a relaxing gathering. Something a small triathlon club can do without incurring much expenses but providing better support. The RM103 paid was on the high side -and with a wrongly sized T-shirt to boot.
Really, seriously. This is M.
As it is, this will be the last triathlon race for 2012. I am happy that I did pretty well (by my own standard) and can close 2012 Triathlon Chapter. Bring on 2013. I can't wait to see what's in store for myself.
Here are some photos at the finish line to be shared with all of you friends and readers.

NOTE : Update December 17, 2012
Hivelocity has clarified that they are not the organiser for this race. I would like to apologise to Hivelocity for the wrong information. The organiser was Voices. Contact details could be obtained here.

ps - Today is the birthday of a very special and important person in my life. Happy birthday dearest wifey. I know you do not like to be put in a spot, so i put you at the end of the spot where all attention will be on you. :) Have a good one and you know I love you with all my heart.
How much?
If infinity has a number, that will be it.
My biggest supporter in everything I ever do. Love ya.

Congratulation Ironman Western Australia Finishers!

Yesterday i followed the Ironman Western Australia from the end of the cycling until the race finish. It was way too exciting to keep pressing F5 and entering the last name (surname/family name) of friends racing it. News of Malaysians finishing the race came in as early as the 10th hour when Kevin Siah finished the race in a fast (HH:MM:SS) 10:16:28. Compounded by the choppy water, strong cross wind and hot run, it was a race to be respected by all racers and supporters.
image from my Instagram
I was doing "live update" on my facebook and twitter almost feeling the excitement and exhilaration of the race. Having raced (only) three Ironman race, I understand the commitment placed and put to finish one race in the given 17hours.
My biggest and warmest congratulations to these Malaysians below.
  • Siah Kevin 10:16:28
  • Ong Yenson 12:47:31
  • Henry  13:43:57
  • Juswil 13:49:35
  • Yap Eng Hui 15:14:31
  • Nik Raiha 15:52:57
  • Cynthia Gan 16:01:11
  • Cheng Fook Wah 16:36:42
Most of them are first timer. Earning their right to be called Ironman. It was not an easy task to complete the 140.6mile race. More so, to be out on the field the whole day racing against yourself and cutoff, they deserves a few standing ovation. As I pen this down, i can vividly recall how it was to finish each of my Ironman race. Emotions is just natural. Sense of achievement is another. For these triathlete, the year of training and sacrifices boiled down to the race yesterday. My salute to all of you, again.
Most of you would know that my blog was renamed to Tristupe simply because my love for Triathlon. There is no easier way, or better way to say it out loud that this multisports should be a lifestyle - at least for me. This song below, done by a fellow triathlete in the States, sum it all up perfectly. I have this video in my iphone play list since 2007.
As you all know, i raced Putrajaya International Triathlon yesterday. The race report is currently being written as you are reading this. With close to 200++ photos taken (by wifey this time), give me a few more hours to sieve through them and make them "fit for publishing". :)
Until then, if you have not TRI, perhaps, it is good time to start. SwimBikeRun. Repeat.

Ironman Western Australia - Good Luck!

This weekend will see one of the A-race for many friends i know personally. Ironman Western Australia will take place in Busselton and I have been eyeing this race for a long time. But alas, due to luck (or the lack of it not able to sign up on time) and monetary restrictions, I've postponed this "dream" for the past 3 years.
IMWA - image from Video Capture of the video below
Come this weekend, a Malaysian Contingent will be racing this race. The like of Cynthia Gan, Nik Raiha, Doc Yap Eng Hui and Cheng Fook Wah - four people I know inside and outside of Facebook, will be racing this weekend. The 140.6miles race will be done in maximum of 17hours. For the Pros, nothing more than 9hours. The Pros will be inspirational - but none will be more inspiring that the average people racing the race : the Age Groupers.
Participant names in the local paper. Image from Cynthia's Facebook. Spotted Cheng and another Fellow Malaysian (Henry Wong) in the list.
My four friends above will be racing the 3.8km swim, 180.2km bike and 42.2km run - making it a 226.2km (140.6miles) journey. For some of you that might not know what or why the big deal about this race, you first would have to understand what is triathlon race. I've wrote a blog entry here.
Ironman, not to be mistaken with the movie with the guy in red that can fly, is actually a brand name from World Triathlon Corporation (WTC). Attempting a distance (140.6miles) such as these are also known as "Iron-distance". It is a race that many trained for at least a year. A camaraderie that perhaps only those that has attempted and successfully completed it understand. For the like of Cynthia, Eng Hui and Nik Raiha, it is their first Iron-distance race. An A-race that will allow them to brag finishing. A Race that I wish and hope that they will preserve, continue and finishes. When they cross the line (before the clock strikes) in 17hours, they will be known as "Ironman".
This is a race not about the distance, but it is about how long you can keep going.
Remember, You are racing with no one but yourself. My salute to all of you racing this weekend.
Meanwhile...
I be racing this weekend in Putrajaya. It will be a short 1km Swim - 30km Bike - 8km Run. I might not be doing Irondistance, but I will be SwimmingBikingRunning. Putrajaya holds a lot of promises to host world class triathlon events. I am hoping one day, the Irondistance race will return to Malaysia.

Malaysia Women Marathon 2013

A marathon organised JUST for women. How cool is that? Never mind the gender bias in this race but this inaugural event set on April 7, 2013 holds a lot of promises to be successful. To start with, the Logo of the race already celebrate the curves of being a woman.
Taken from their Facebook page
Taken from their Facebook page, the describe themselves below, in their own womanly words

About

The Malaysia Women Marathon will focus on the celebration of women in the world of running. It is timely to take a bigger share of limelight for women do well in marathons. The world record for women's marathon is only 10 minutes behind the men's.
Description
The first Malaysia Women Marathon (MWM) will be held in the city of Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia.

The objective of this marathon is to celebrate the strength and quiet resolute of women in developing their family, nation and the world.

We will have an interesting guest speaker....a running legend. so stay tuned for the surprise. The pre-event program will also consist of a dialogue with
this running legend and other women race directors in the region. We can talk about how far we have come and how far we can go .....:) . A fashion show will bring out some eye-catching fashionable apparels and change your style when running.

Categories will consist of full marathon, half marathon and 8km run. male entry on condition : husbands, sons, fathers, brothers, coach, pacer, trainer, and Abercombie & Fitch's 6 packs torso-ed guys :)

All in all, its an event for us women to come together and inspire one another to go get that marathon done. who says women cant run the marathon!!

Lets go out there and show em!

The Facebook page has been around since July, 2012 and has pretty much went "undercover" until two days ago when they announced the first Women Only Marathon in Malaysia. If 42km is not your mileage of dream, the organisers has stated that there will be the Half (21km) and 8km run to take part. While it is marketed as a "Women Run", they has also put the statement that it will be opened for "Men, as long as they are husbands, sons, fathers, brothers, coach, pacer, trainer and guys with 6-packs." - Which makes ALL us MEN folks. Hooray!
The Page admin has noted that the website is in progress and will be available early 2013. The registration for the race will also happen once the website is up.
Ladies, you now have at least 4 months to train for your (first ever, if you not ran any) Marathon. The journey to cover your first 42.195km race happens now.
Now, i only hope is that the race will be organised by a group of reputable organisers. I sort of know who they are based on the patterns (of comments or no comments) in the Facebook page. :) And with that, I have reasons to believe that this group will show how a run should be organised and done. Stay tuned to my blog for more info as the event unravels.

Positive Outlook In Life

On Monday, I went for my usual run. Not feeling really up to it due to some situation that has been bothering me the past months. Not one to waste an hour of inactivity, I decided to suck it up and just run it. It was supposed to be my taper week, but the race this coming weekend will not be strenuous enough to warrant an all out tapering and preparation. So, i decided, against my own plan to perform a Hill Interval Tempo; instead of just a Hill workout. That's three different workout all rolled into one.
This blog entry however, wasn't about the "half-hearted run that i put in 150%".
It was what happened after the run that has actually made me think the better half of the evening.
Sweating and all, i got myself into the sauna room. I does a lot of stretching and some yoga in the sauna room. I found that doing that in a hotter environment helps with my recovery much faster. Unlike any other days, there was a man, elderly, sitting there.
And I am not someone that will strike any conversation - not when I am in a company of an unknown man and we were half naked/covered in towel.
"is it raining outside?", the man asked
"No, sir", i answered, avoiding eye contact.
And like an uninvited guest, the man started more conversation.
"I have a dilemma. My doctor asked me to lose weight as I am diabetic", the man, which looked height and weight proportion said.
"Oh Lord, please spare me any details of small talk, please!" i spoke to myself, but at the same time, smiling.
"Now, the doctor is asking me to put on more weight", he continued as i made my first eye contact.
"I have cancer". He said.
There was a moment of silence - as if he know I will not be asking anything.
"I am so sorry to hear that Sir", i added. This time, it was me continuing the conversation.
My mother in law was diagnosed with Type A Lymphoma (non-Hodgkin) about 18 months ago. Series of chemo and radio-therapies. Frustrations and uncertainties, mixed with anxieties and painful experiences of watching a healthy lady losing half her weight and losing all her hair.
I felt bad.
Felt bad that I was not sympathetic in the first place.
"My doctor said it is Lymph Cancer. Non-Hodgkin. At my crotch", he added, smiling. As if it was his badge-of-honor.
After knowing his condition and his battle the past six-months with the cancer, which he said, was finally removed (thumb sized). I reflected on my own condition.
Low iron.
Sciatica.
Career path.
Kids.
It all looked minute. Almost negligible.
I excused myself as the sauna was getting incredibly hot and humid - perhaps my own conscience.
How can a man, diagnosed with cancer just 6 months ago, can look at me and tell me this with a straight face, with almost no sadness but happiness?
How can a man, his age (75 which i later found out), be this positive, when he know himself (as he told me) that, "hey, tomorrow if i have to go, I've done it all"?
It was one of the longer shower I took at the club. Not because i was sweatier than usual, but, here I am. 36. Sometimes fill myself with negativity. Complains.
Can i just wash these away? Please?
It has been almost 16 months since I had my depression. Life for me now has been superb. It is more balance. I've re-prioritised. I've changed my eating and living habits. Became stronger and healthier. Had the chance to see my kids really grow over the past one year.
But somehow, we were all not satisfied.
That is until the elderly man share with me the story of his "dilemma".
It is true, as the old saying goes :
"None is as blind as those that do not want to see; and as deaf as those that do not want to listen".
It is raining now and I am in a melancholic mood. Anyone wants to listen to my Dilemma?
There is no cloud the sun won't shine through

Healthy Homemade Meatloaf

Meatloaf is not usually served or eaten in Malaysia. Locally, we have our own version of cutlets (made from fish) or meat patties mixed with potatoes. As me and wifey often believes in eating what we know is inside (our food), we decided to make our own meatloaf. I heard and was told that meatloaf out there are made mostly of offal (spare parts) and parts unwanted from butchery. Simply said, the same stuff that goes into your hotdogs/frankfurters. Here is the simple recipe, for a 100% beef meatloaf (in the sense no spare parts).
What You Need (serve four)
600grams of minced beef - as usual, ours are lean and fat (almost) free
1 cup of breadcrumbs - we got them ready made. Otherwise, you can easily make this by toasting/baking bread and crunch it to smaller pieces. Breadcrumbs are more as a bulking for the meatloaf.
1 egg
1 onion
1 or two cloves of garlic
Salt and Pepper
How to prepare it
Simple, dice the onion and garlic and add everything into a large mixing bowl. You then mash everything up with your (clean) hands and ensure all ingredients are properly mixed. You then oil (we did with olive oil) a baking tray that is rectangular in shape (or the tray you use to bake a loaf of bread) press and compact it down and place it in the oven at 180degree C for about 45minutes. You can use a pan or whatever container you have (that can be "baked") but you would have to call this a Meatpan (as it's not a Loaf). OK, I know, bad joke.
After 45minutes, poke with a toothpick to ensure that the meat are cooked. If the toothpick comes out clean, it's ready. Otherwise, leave it in there for 5minutes more (until it's cooked). What we did was we killed the oven after 45minutes and let the meatloaf sits in the oven for another 15minutes on residual heat. This is to "dry" up the meatloaf.
cut to reveal a juicy meatloaf
Suggested serving
You can serve this on freshly cut lettuce and carrot as salad or if you are like us that ran out of any vegetables decided to make some sauteed mushrooms with mustard seeds, HP sauce and some ketchup. Just slice up some button mushrooms, smash some mustard seeds, a dash of HP sauce, a spoon of kethcup and some water and cook them on low heat. To thicken the sauce, just add in some cornflour (Wok With Yan, the cook show in the 1990's call this the "wonder powder") and stir until the sauce thicken. Pour over the meatloaf and you now, have a meal.
Yummeh.
Alternatively, you can make other sauces too, but keep the ingredient to minimal as the sauce is to complement the meatloaf, not to overpower it and we are a firm believer if you need a lot of sauce on your food, chances are the meal are below standard (goes out to all of you that love your sandwiches with tonnes of dressings ;-))
Nutritional Content
The estimated calories count from one serving (or about 150grams of meatloaf) works out to be circa 300kcal. With the added sauce and mushroom, an easy 80kcal extra will be added. For about 380kcal, you get a meal that is predominatly protein (55grams) with about 10grams of fat (yes, even if this is a blardy lean meat!) and with negligible carbs (from the sugar in the sauces).
Enjoy!

My Quest To Take Commendable Images Part 2

A continuation from my previous post on taking commendable images, I hope those images gives you a perspective of what I saw through the viewfinder. On the other extreme where I learn to take photography of small insects or objects, otherwise known as "macro" (or micro to some manufacturers), it requires a whole different perspective and patience level to make the image work. My current set up for Macro is seriously limited by the lense i have. Here is what I typically use on an hour trip out at the park to get some practice. Be informed though, that my idea of photography is very much using whatever I have in my drybox. I often believe I should try to maximise what I have, instead of over-depending on gears (that requires a lot of money).
The Gears
Camera Body : Nikon D3 or Nikon D90 : I prefer the D3 due to the bigger sensor and better sensitivity that even when cropped, there is minimal noise. The D90 is good too, but would be great if a dedicated Macro lense is available.

Lense : I am using an old 35-80mm plastic kit lense
Basic 35-80mm lense
Ideally, for Macro, you will need a proper/dedicated macro lense. A macro lense allows you to go closer than normal lense at a higher "zoom" level. The reproduction too, will be almost "life size". This meant, if your lense is a 1:1, your image taken (at life size) at closest focusing will be able to fill up the whole camera sensor. Dedicated Macro lense will allow a more comfortable "distance" between the subject and you. For equipment lacked Joe with Camera like me, we use a Macro Filter - something with a glass element attached to the front of the lense. It tricks the camera to think that the focus point is now closer. That also meant I would have to move closer, often time, within inches from the subject to get the desired magnification. In the absence of this lense, I substitute with a Macro filter. It is a screw-in type that fits a specific lense diameter. Mine fits a 52mm lense.

Flash - light source is actually the most important item (apart from having a camera, that is) and it actually more important that having a dedicated Macro lense. You see, when you are shooting Macro, the depth of field must be high aka the F-stop must be small. Meaning, the whole idea of a "fast aperture lense" at F2.8 (or bigger) does not and will not be advantageous - unless all you want is only ONE part of the subject to be in focus (as the other portion will be blurred - or bokeh). Typically, shooting a Macro will require you to take at F8 and higher - aka the aperture will be small, or smaller. For this, my tool of choice (or rather what i have) is my Nikon SB600.
The Speedlight with attached Diffuser
Diffuser - Harsh flash light will " burn" the subject out, giving you very harsh results. You will need some sort of material to diffuse the (flash) light. For that, a simple white semi-transparent material would do (will cover this more separately). As I have a Lambency diffuser laying around, I thought why not make use of this, since it is there. You can also use this to cook instant noodle if you need to.

Putting It All Together
I do my weekly "hunting" at the local park. My usual place would be where there is a lot of undergrowth where there will be increased chances of finding insects and creatures. I would say that many times, I managed to find something, or rather, look hard enough (with bare eyes) and find something. Always set the camera up before starting to look. Opportunity doesn't come often and you wouldn't want to miss anything.

To help you out, my starting camera setting is always at M(anual) mode using F16 and at 1/250s. ISO typically at 100 or 200 max. Flash will be set to TTL (or through the lense aka allow the camera smart firmware to decide what/how much lights to fire).Once in a while, I would use a remote flash firing with another set of device. That will be covered separately.
Basic lense setup. This is like putting a Kancil on a Merc Engine.
The Results
My macro shots are often cropped from the original. Reason for this is the reproduction rate is not at 1:1 or life size. At best, it is about 30% life size. But with a larger sensor from the full-frame camera, I can crop the photo and see the details. In actuality, this is not considered as "macro", as anyone can "crop" any photo and make this happen. But this is what I have, and at this point of time, I am pretty happy with it. Enjoy some of these captures.
Daisy. 80mm. F16. 1/320. ISO100. No crop.
80mm. F16. 1/200. ISO200. No crop.
The top two photos shows "no crop" situation. Details can't be seen as clear or "close up". But once the images are cropped closer, it starts starting at your face.
Nikon D3. 80mm+closeup filter. ISO200. 1/250s. F16. 100% crop. This spider was about 6mm in diameter, which explained the larger cropping for details.
How big is 6mm? Here, the spider above landed on my watch and I was prepared.

One of the many joy of macro is to find rare things. While they cost almost nothing to anyone, it is a wealth of information to some that wants to learn. Like for example, have you seen a
Terrestrial flatworm (Platyhelminthes)

Of course, occasionally, there are some Symbiosis show in nature, like how this red ant (Kerengga) was "interacting" with this small looking...worm

Or something morbid like a Wolf Spider, dead and hanging on it's own web?
Nikon D3. 80mm+Macro filter. ISO200. F16. 1/250s. SB600 with Lambency diffuser TTL mode. No crop.
Or a feeding by one spider, sucking an ant dry, slowly? I observed this action for a full 45minutes. The Spider allowed me to do so and I had close to 40 images, of which, only a handful can be used (the disadvantage of using a macro filter). The sequence of photos (in lower resolution) below shows how the Spider ambushed the ant by the head, suck it dry, flip it around and finish the whole abdominal juice...slowly. Awesome.
It's either me or you Buddy.
Gotcha
Munch..Munch...Munch...
Now, to finish the tummy. Noticed the head of the ant significantly smaller?
The above were captured using the Nikon D3. 80mm with macro filter. ISO200. F16. 1/250s. SB600 with Lambency diffuser in TTL mode. All images cropped as the spider and ants was small! Before I finish off the post for today, here, a proof, that even in the insect world, while these spiders are known to be hunter, could not resist a free meal.

Happy hunting! Stay tune for more Macro coming from me, soon!
