IronMan 2008 Countdown : Reality Check

At the time of writing, it is really 289 Days 8 Hours and 48 Minutes away. My entry to IM 2008 is secured after having the early bird fee paid and cleared and confirmed by Ms. Lyn of LIEM.

To those that goes to the IM page and found the phone/addie not accurate/reachable, that is because it was not updated.

The Corporate Office of LIEM is at:

9E, 5th Floor,
Wisma Cai Yoon,
Lorong Medan Tuanku 1,
53300, KL

With less that 289 days to go, i'm yet to book any room or even book any flights to Langkawi. Air Asia is not selling the tixs at RM9.99 one way (not incl of taxes and surcharges). I must do something about this pronto and i guess i need to sit down with wifey and confirm it once and for all.

So, after 2 OD Tri (A'Famosa and Bukit Merah), and 2 more Tri to come (PD Tri and Desaru Long Distance) in near future, is this 4 races enough for my preparation for IM next year?

Throw in the Powerman race at the end of the year, i sure hope it would give me enough exposure to race the race of a lifetime come 23rd Feb 2008.

In the process, i need to run at least 1 more marathon, which i hope will happen in Putrajaya Marathon. I need to do more long rides in access of 180km to gain mileage. I need to start swimming more often, perhaps even taking up classes like most of my tri buddies do.

So many things to do. So many things to consider. I will only get one chance to do it next year, and i hope i would do it right. Finishing the race is my ultimate aim. 17 freaking hours, racing from morning till night just to try my luck to get IronMan to my name. Am i nuts, or what?

Will it be all worth it? To sweat and cry over 3.8km of swim, 180km of bike and 42km of run?

Pic taken from Faie's blog - first time i see myself so serious in race...hahahaha...

Hearing stories from first time IronMan finisher such as Azwar is heart warming. How he passed out and went back to run despite being told not to do so.

I have intention of starting a new blog to signify my journey to be an Ironman, but i'm not sure if i'm ready to abandon this one as yet. Or should i?

289 days is not very far away. Times flies and i hope, by then, i'm more than ready to complete the IronMan race.

Here is a collection of report from last weekend's Bukit Merah Tri.

Bukit Merah Tri 2007 : Report

Firstly, apologies for updating the blog a bit late. I know some regulars are wondering when i will update it. I was caught in a whole day meeting on Monday, which started at 10am till 1pm, then rushed off to anohter one at 2.30 till 5pm. Yesterday i was also in meeting from 9.30am at Sri Kembangan, then to Teluk Panglima Garang and then back to Sri Kembangan again whole day...

Yes, contarary to everyone's belief, i do have a job, just it's not paying me, that is all.

Now to the report.

The last that a tri was organised in Bukti Merah was in 2004. This time around, it was a-calling to those that had done Bukit Merah before to come back to pay pilgramage and for newbies like me, which has not tasted Bukit Merah, to be initiated.

I drove down (or rahter up) to Bukit Merah with Shazly. The journey took us about 3hours 30minutes toll to toll from Damansara exit to Bukit Merah exit. Unlike someone we all know, he did it in 2hours 10 minutes. For someone like this other chap, it took them almost 5 hours (with 3 food stop included).

All arrived safe and sound at Bukit Merah. First thing anyone would notice from the highway is an almost vertical road on the right side of the highway, which leads into Bukit Merah. I bet you that most triathletes and wannabes (like me) will start freaking out thinking that we will have to climb that hill TWICE in the race (once out of transition and once back to transition).

Taken from Ishsal's Lifelog

Bukit Merah, essentially is a water reservoir. That meant the water quality would be better compared to A'Famosa

The saturday started with the Biathlon race. It consist of 1km swim and 5km run. Steve brought his canoe along for some action in the water. Aiman, Zabil's eldest daughter will take part in the Biathlon.

Now, if the name Zabil rings a bell, he is one of the people that went to Aconcagua, along with Stephanie Chok of course.

With such fit IronMan father, it is only natural that daughter Aiman will win the age category of the biathlon (she is 8 and she won the under 12 category)

From Ishsal's Lifelog

Well done Aiman, for her effort, she won RM300. Enough to buy anohter Kuota Kalibur like her dad's (but of course, Dad had to chip in the rest).

That night, as usual, was the carbo loading dinner. The food was great and was in abundance, compared to A'Famosa where some triathelete has to go back to their rooom hungry, this time was a welcomed change.

Burp....

After dinner, Azwar, Azmar, Bacin, Shazly and me was busy discussing things totally not in context of Triathlon...

yes ah?

Later that night, me, Bacin and Shazly went out for some burger...it cost us only RM1.70 for a simple burger Ramly...damn...you need to pay RM2.20 in KL for this! We went to sleep happy. Who won't when there is so much food?

Priceless pic of Bacin in Sarong and Frog

The next morning, Bacin's chicken call alarm woke us all up by 5.45am. We took turn to take shower and donned on our tri suit.

I had my breakkie, which consist of some pastries which wifey bought for me. Got a vegetarian breakkie to power me on. I did not eat any powerbar for this race!

I ate all except one last kaya puff, which i kept for post race recovery....

That day, Shazly and Bacin were dressed in the same tri suit. They never felt closer in their life before.

Separated at Birth

Then, as we wanted to leave the room to the transition area, the rain poured heavily down. Azah came to the room and laughed at us. We waited for a while for the rain to slow down and then we walked to the transition. We saw Ishsal near the transition area, obviously more charged up than the rest of us, which seems to be more interested to go back to bed and sleep.

Together with us was actually 2 relay team from RMC and one individual participant, all of them doing their first Tri. Shazly brought along his Louis Garnaeu bike for the OD chap. He is RMC's Hockey Captain which has just won the MSSKL U-18 tournamanet, beating Setapak High just last week. So, with the boys all highly charged up and at their fittest physical state, older chap like me and Shazly just have to hope we won't be duly embarassed by them at the end of the day.

As we parked out bikes at the transition area, the rain started to ease off. We walked to the jetty to get our body marked. The fun has just begun.

Check out my man boobs

We then moved to the jetty and got into the water for some warm up. The water was warm and it was nice. Shrugging the fact that Bukit Merah is a reservoir and the water might be as deep as 25 meters, i'm just happy that the visibility was only up to a meter...what you don't know won't hurt you!

and that was why i sat at the pontoon while others swam to warm up...

Race started at 8am sharp and took everyone by surprise. I managed to start the watch and slipped into the water as the pontoon was unstable with so many people launching themselves into the water.

The first lap was supposed to be 750meters and we are supposed to climb up the pontoon and dive into the water again. At 750meters/lap 1, i checked my time and it was a slow 25 minutes! Something is wrong here! It seems like it's a timing for 1km swim instead!!!!

Beached whale!

I came out from the first lap right behind Steve. The second lap seems like it took forever to finish and at the second pontoon, Zabil turned around and saw me.

"Fuh, laju nampak", he jested

Only thing he did not know is how much i'm struggling even with breast stroke...

I swam and swam and saw Shazly right infront of me. By then, Steve was out of sight with his Total Immersion Freestyle.

I got out of the water, slipped and knocked my right shin on the stairs. Ouch.

A quick check shows i've been swimming for 51minutes...damn, this is a 2KM swim!

The run to the transition was a pretty long one, took the oppurtunity to recover and raced to the transition.

Stop cam whoring Stupe!

As per usual, i can't help but to check if my buddies' bike are still on the rack. This time, i was out of the water first. Shazly came soon after, Steve and Zabil followed suit. I felt i must had done my fastest transition in my Tri Racing history. I was out within a minute and was cycling as i passed the line.

"Bukit Merah is flat", I tell myself.

"You have to go fast, irregardless of anything, you just swam a slow 51minutes, got to recover if you want to do a sub 3hours this time", I told myself.

Azwar shows how it was done...

I got onto aero position right after i clipped the shoe onto the pedal. Right in front of me was the RMC boys...obviously all swam faster than me. I overtook them and asked them to draft with me, but being new to the sport, they do not know what i meant.

The bike route was flat on most spot, except one or two portion where a bit of effort needs to be exerted to climb. A quick check on the meter says i'm doing almost 36km/h consistently. No one to draft with and only aero position as the saving grace, i powered on, overtaking a couple of other bikers.

Already on their journey back were the front triatheltes. I merely covered 8km and they are on their way back to transition.

When will i become like them?

I checked my average and it was a good 34km/h until i reached the U-Turn at the end of the Bukit Merah Dam road. By then, i saw Steve, Zabil, Shazly and the RMC boys. Not letting the pace down, i powered on, hoping they will catch me so i could draft with them.

At the U turn, the distance showed was 18km, meaning it's already 2km short. I have a feeling that the bike course will be shorter.

On my return journey, i saw Doc, Kam, Ishsal, Bacin, Azmar(which i found out later had a punture as he exited transition), Jaja, Karen, Abu, Dicky and the rest of the buddies.

A short climb before the last 2 junction and my average dropped to 32km/h.

I finished the biking route in 1hour 2minute 22 seconds (incl transition) with a fast 31.9km/h average. Got to be my personal best for a distance of 33km!

Alex manning the transition, got a good kncok on the head form him for being slow!

Jaja crashed into Karen at transition...only minor injury la...

Again, i did not spend too long in transition. Zabil came in right after i parked my bike. Did not waste any more time that i should, i grabbed my half hat and botttle and ran for it.

The run will be 2 loops of 5km each. All triatheltes has to grab 4 ribbons to signify that they ran to all end of the loop.

Completing the first 5km...half dead...

The run was ok. It might had been less than 10km or more, i don't know. Legs felt fine and found second wind after collecting the second ribbon. Could run faster.

I recalled Eugene shouting this to me...

"Oi...enough water station la, don't need take bottle", when i see him the first time on the run

Which, i then left the bottle at the last water station before the U turn...

"Oi..this is not a simulation race, run faster!", he shouted again as i see him for the second time...

I swore i picked up the pace after that.

As i collected my third ribbon from the marshall, i know i only have less than 3km to go. Throughout the race, i make it a point to shout out to all i know. SO, if i ever make any of you felt uncomfy with my shout outs, i'm really sorry!

I ran into transition area, knowing i got less than 500 meters to go before ending the race. Clock shows i've race for 2hours 59minutes. Looked like i'll missed the sub 3 hours mark yet again. It's impossible to run the final 500meters in les than a minute. Even if i'm a world class 400meters sprinter, it will take 40 seconds at least (wow...consistently 10seconds/100meters) to create that miracle...

I finished the race in yet another slow 3hours plus. Not entirely sure what exactly it was as my HRM refused to STOP after i pressed it and i failed to note the timing. It finally stopped at 3Hours 4 Minutes and 37 seconds.

Lenggang-lenggang kangkung...

It must had taken me about 1hour 5minutes to complete the 10km run. Which was pretty standard for me. Got to put in more effort to do faster 10km race if i seriously want to improve on my timing.

Aiya....damn char la...

Post race notes:
1. I stayed in aero position 95% throughout the race and felt great about it. Guessed i found the sweetspot with the aerobar and Colnago

2. If the swim was 1.5km, which i could complete in maximum of 35minutes, i stand to cut off 16 minutes from my total time. Given the deficit of 7km on the bike, it might had taken an extra 12 minutes to cover that distance (at 32km/h average, 7km is about 0.2 or almost 1/5 of the distance, meaning 60minutesx0.2 = 12 minutes) of 7km and my run time to be the same, i would had shaven 4 minutes off and come in at a flat 3hours!

Wishful thinking la...it will be easier to just TRAIN HARD and TRAIN SMART for the next race.

3. Thank you to Abu and his brother for the pics above. Also to Ishsal and also Azhar(pls email me the pics) for being so kind to let me share all the pics.

I will give Kenyir a miss as it's 1001000km back and forth (with 6-8 hours of driving one way) and will concentrate on PD Tri instead!

To all of you that did Bukit Merah, well done! You guys are ready for Desaru Long Distance Triathlon with the 2km swim!!! Woo Hoo!!!

Thank you! Sorry la...was really tired in the pic above!

Bike Ride : Caught In Action

Did the usual 30km ride.

Feel pretty good.

Then, i got caught again by Ishsal as i passed the Pencala Link Toll.

2 days to Bukit Merah International Triathlon and i felt i've not trained enough. So, today was a MUST do workout.

Workout stats...

Not too bad, improved a good 4 minutes!!!!

24th April ride

now, the next thing to do is to look for a uber secret training route where no one (like ishsal) would find!

Hahaha...

See most of you at Bukit Merah this weekend!

I just counted and this is my 500th posting..woo hoo!

3 babes and Thamesa

Thamesa is having a sale from today onwards.

For most of us (including yours truly, until about 3 years ago), we usually think Thamesa furnitures are more suited for the Mak Datin type; elaborate and well, just too chunky and showy.

But i was wrong (3 years ago). Thamesa actually makes nice stuff! And when they have sale, it could go as high as 80% off!

So, yesterday, me, wifey, LL1 and LL2 went to Thamesa during lunch hour.

Me and Wifey were there to scout for a new set of Sofa (L shaped, preferably) to place in the new home which we will purchase (ok, sign S&P) next week.

Previously, me and wifey has bought a 2.5 seater sofa, a huge coffee table(which we later sold, reluctantly), a 6x4feet dining table and a short couch/seater. After 2 years, the furniture still looked like new.

Now, to think that we paid a premium for it is not entirely true. We bought the stuff during the previous Thamesa sale 3 years ago.

We did find what we wanted yesterday at Thamesa and LL1 and LL2 bought things for their home as well! LL1 bought 2 of the short couch/seater and LL2 bought 1. Both bought some other stuff like nice vase as well.

Then, after paying for it (which by the way, the short couch was retailing at 400++ and now going for RM159, while stock last), it strucked us how we are going to take it back.

The short couch is 4 feet(Length) x 2feet(Width) x 0.5feet(Thick). There is 3 of those. There is 4 of us. There is only one car (ie the Matrix).

I forgot to take the baby pram out from the boot, and that could only mean one thing. It will be almost impossible to ship everything (stuffs and passengers) back in one trip.

more like STUPE, use your head!

So, after 2 tries, i decided to put the larger back seat (which split 60-40, so i put the 60 down la), placed the baby pram flat and shove all 3 couch into the space available.

the 3 short couch/seater

This also meant that there is only the smaller 40 seat available to put 2 Leng Lui (LL's)...luckily the 2 LL small size, so, they managed to squeeze/sit/cramp/fight on the small one seater. Wifey and me, obviously was the most comfy.

LL1 tell LL2 : Stop pushing or i'll open the door and push you out...

Now, as you can see, the sales at Thamesa is to die for (how else would you explain us cramping inside the Matrix like that?)

On anohter note, i'm very impressed with the Matrix's space. Lets see how the so claimed Honda City with it's 500liter of space (after the seats all folded up) challenge the Matrix with this feat!

So, if you head on to Thamesa this weekend, look for Ms. Connie in the Jalan Universiti branch if you need any help with regards to the furnitures, she will be more than happy to help you out!

Sate Celup, The Lim's Style

On Labour day, my parents and my 2 sisters went down to Melaka for some outing. The inital plan is to be at Melaka to go to the temple at Temple Street as it was Wesak Day afterall.

Now, tell me, how is anyone that goes to Melaka not eat anything there?

My dad is a full time vegetarian, so, he can't eat anything. Well, that was what i thought until i found out later that he had like 5 servings of cendol to make up the Assam laksa, Nyoya Laksa, Baba Laksa and sate celup he can't get to eat.

So, since me, wifey and Ryan is back in KL that day, they decided to buy a packet of Sate Celup's sauce to let me and wife taste.

My mum call Sate Celup as Sate Telur and my dad call it Sate Cerut. Don't ask me how this come about.

Fu Yoh...

Mum bought prawns and cuttlefish, some meatball, quill eggs, seafood tofu, some seafood fishcakes and some dim sum looking ball with crab stick on top. Dad bought some Yau Char Kuey and i got some extra Sate Kajang and Nasi Impit(which my dad could eat with the peanut sauce).

Sate Celup -The Lim Style

Dad had the first right to anything before we contaminate the sauce with things which aren't vegetarian. So, he brought along his vegetarian meat and had a feast himself.

Sate Kajang but he can't eat them...

Mum also cooked the home made noodle in clear broth which we hokkien knows as Loh Mee (the Penang version has dark sauce). The noodle is pressed and made using a huge rubber roller; a roller which the olden days people used to press rubber!

Have you seen anyone making noodles from these????

I will take pic of that rubber roller which is at my granma's place...

Loh Mee in Chicken Broth

Nothing beats home cooked food!

Ryan in Port Dickson

Last Sunday to Tuesday, me, Wife, Ryan, Chit, Siew Peng(which from now will be known as LL1 and LL2 as in Leng Lui), Roland, Yen, Marvin and Auntie G went to Port Dickson for a shot holiday/break.

I went to PD hoping to do some secret training but the only training i got to do was a short 9km run from Ancasa to the Roundabout and back. I did not swim in the sea as much as i want to because the beaches at Pantai Lido (ie KM7-KM9) was not only filled with holiday makers but also by irresponsible Mat Rempit On Water aka those beachbums on Jet Skis.

They were whizzing up and down parallel to the beach, less than 30meters away from the sandbank.

If the local council/state government are wondering why PD is a dead town, maybe they should start by going to the beach themselves and seeing it.

Diapers strewn on the beach, plastic bags of rubbish piling up, beachfront stores which sells food discharging their waste directly into the sea/beach, couples camping on the beach displaying so much of PDA (Public Display of Affection) that it could make me blush, G-strings and lacey undergarment laid out to dry by their camps, women in black bra and white t-shirts swimming in the sea.

You name it. They got it all in PD.

Anyhow, i did manage to get a good 30minutes dip in the sea water. Nevermind the nuisance above, it's nothing compared to some public shooting/execution in US of A.

Now, before i even side tracked on what i wanted to write...*take deep breath*...

PD was enjoyable because of the good company we had.

Dinner was planned for Lukut town to taste the supposedly famous Chicken Curry Bun at Lucky Restaurant but it was given a miss as we do not want to risk ending up in KL looking for it. So, we helped ourselves with some seafood (ie Crabs) at one of the restaurant along the mainroad where local go and have their food.

It was alright as it cost us RM107 for 6 dishes and 7 adults (hungry) eating.

The highlight of Day 1 was actually LL2 brought along her breadmaker to make us some bread.

Measure water first. We are making Garlic Cheese Herb Bread

As Auntie LL2 shows above, she is simply to LL to show her face (but actually because shy la).

Breakfast for Day 2

LL2 brought along all the stuffs needed to make bread. The flour, the herbs, the oil, the yeast. You name it. The only extra thing we bought was yogurht. Supposely to make the bread a bit softer.

Put in Ms.Yogi and Ms. Honey

Then pour in some oil and get Stupe to open the flour mix

Pour in the flour and put in some mixed herbs

And Parsley, Sesame and Poppy seeds

And finally, the Yeast and some salt. Great View from the top eh?

next, you set the time delay so the machine will automatically make the bread...

Later that night, everyone gathered around the TV and watch some nonsensical TV show. House of Flying Daggers were on TV and so is anohter Chinese show. But nothing made us laugh louder when we saw the mandarin Version of Deal or No Deal, which when the player and host spoke, was meant as Sell or No Sell...

Yes, it was lame. We had fun trying to figure out what each of the contestant does for a living. We came to the conclusion that the winner that night that brought back RM50k is actually a handphone seller because every inch of him oozes that. Doesn't help with him having a friend by the name of JASOND (instead of the usual Jason...) that has a Nokia Communicator strapped on his belt...

Everyone laughed and slept.

As Day 2 wasn't a holiday (Monday, 30th April), Auntie G and Yen had to go back to work in KL. So, they woke up and drove themselves back to KL. Only to return much later in the evening.

Everyone woke up smelling the aroma of the Garlic Cheese Bread that Auntie LL2 made...

Fu Yoh

While the rest of the people slept, i went to do my secret training which had me running only for 9km to and fro. I then went to buy pakets of nasi lemak for breakfast...so much for running and working out...

Later than afternoon, we all went to Melaka for food (now it all sounded more like i trained my tummy and had an early carbo loading ahead of Bukit Merah Tri this weekend). Wanted to go to Kelvin's parent's place for food but the majority decided that they didn't want to walk that far as we were on the other end of Jonker...

Ryan in his sun hat

Ryan was having loads of fun seeing everything around him As it was hot and sunny, I bought him a bottle of sunblock (Baby Block by Banana Boat) with SPF50. Even with the sunblock, check out how red his cheek was above!

Later that evening, as we came back from Melaka, we decided to bring Ryan to the pool.

Don't take pics of me naked!

I tell you, this son of mine took to water like he was born in it. Maybe because baby has no fear, they aren't scared to begin with. He naturally floats as i put him in the water (i hold him la, his legs goes up either behind or infront).

He splashes the water like he was swimming and once or twice he actually put his head into the water! He drank some water from the pool, choke, cough but did not cry...and he was enjoying it.

Looks like Ryan will see the swimming pool more often from now on. Hooray!

That night, we went to PD town for more seafood, this time, costing about the same amount for more than 7 dishes. Not too bad! I guess as long as we stay away from tourist joint and settle for food where locals eat, we are pretty ok. :)

Later that night, it was more TCSS session until everyone konked out one by one. We secretly hope that they will be anohter Deal Or No Deal coming on the TV that night.

Day 3 was more of a do what you like day. Roland ran the beach, which was about 2km. Auntie G, LL1, Marvin, Yen, Roland, LL2 all went to the beach for a dip. Me, Ryan and wifey decided to let Ryan sleep a bit longer before taking him to the beach.

Watcha looking at?

We checked out at 1pm and headed to Seremban for some Hakka Mee at Tow Kee Hakka Mee Restaurant. It was pretty hard to locate as it was hidden. First timer will have problem looking for it. The Hakka mee was good. The portion big for RM3.20 and it wasn't soggy despite being soaked in some clear broth.

Dude, where's my mee?

We all went home after lunch and rested. Thank God the next day was still a holiday!

Thank you to LL1, LL2, Roland, Auntie G, Marvin and Yen for the wonderful time in PD. It was a good escape from KL and it was definately a good Labour Day break!

Jalan-Jalan Cari Makan...

I was sending my son to his granma house this morning at about 9am. As i was going exiting the tunnel which joins Damansara Perdana to LDP, there was a traffic police block.

One of their favourite place i reckon. Usually they catches people which fails to wear seatbelts, heavily tinted cars ,also driving with handphone and beating the red lights.

I've not seen anyone which were stopped sign any summons. I've not seen any police tears off any summons from their book.

Usually, they would have a men in blue (usually officer with pips on their shoulders) waiting on one end with a walkie and 3 or 4 men in white (usually wearing the yellow safety vest, covering their regimental number and name).

So, it's of no surprise to me when i see them. I know better to wear seat belt and not answer the phone while driving.

After dropping Ryan at his granma's place, i exited Bandar Utama via TV3. As it is usually not adviseable to take the short cut and try to merge with the traffic along LDP to escape the traffic light infront, i, as per usual, takes the traffic light route.

As i stopped at the traffic light, there was anohter police roadblock.

Same setup as the one at 9am.

Man in Blue near the underpass with men in white along the road

And it's the same team i supposed!

While i would not assume that they are "makan-ing", i still think the police force could be more productive than stand at these points for 30 minutes at least trying to nab traffic offenders. It is funny sometimes, especially so when someone driving at 140km/h on the highway, overtaking everyone and a police patrol car, but nothing is done. I see driving at speed exceeding the legal limit to be a bigger offence than say "being hauled up when the lights turn yellow".

Scene that will scares any motorcyclists

Now, how famous are we again when it comes to "giving-taking"??? Very. Very. Very.

A friend today sent me an online news clipping about an ongoing exercise in Spain, where the police are out to nab errant senior government officials from various local councils. The whole operation was code named:

"Operaci Malaya"

Now the Spain police comes out with that name can only makes me wonder just how corrupted we are, to be modelled and to have an Police Operation in Spain in honour of our country.

Operaci Malaya

It takes two to tango. So, the next time you think about bribing anyone, don't. Lets try to put a stop to this culture.

Wait up while i try to find out what it takes to secure the next project...
